Jay J. Kim is a foreign attorney (admitted in New York) at Kim & Chang specializing in disputes and crisis management, with a focus on intellectual property, product liability and environmental issues. His practice also includes IP prosecution and licensing, in addition to extensive experience in regulatory issues across various industries.

At Kim & Chang, Mr. Kim has managed patent and product liability disputes across various industries, with a focus on pharmaceuticals, chemicals, biotech and consumer products. His work has included some of the leading patent and product liability cases litigated in Korea, involving blockbuster drugs, polymers, petrochemicals, consumer products, automobiles, vaccines and infant formula additives. In addition, Mr. Kim has also worked on numerous soft IP litigations and enforcement cases, advising clients such as leading luxury brands and sports leagues to deal with counterfeiting, online infringement and ownership disputes. His IP practice also covers prosecution, transactions and criminal matters. He also has extensive experience in environmental litigations, pharmaceutical and chemical regulatory issues, government affairs and licensing. 

Mr. Kim regularly participates as a speaker and panelist at various international conferences held by organizations such as the AIPLA, INTA, IBA, DRI, ChemCon, LES, ICPHSO and PLAC, while also contributing articles to various legal publications. 

Before joining Kim & Chang, Mr. Kim served at the Judge Advocate’s Office of the Korean military’s Defense Procurement Agency, focusing on defense contract negotiations. He also worked in the New York office of Pennie & Edmonds as an attorney focusing on patent prosecution and enforcement, and previously at Foster Wheeler as an engineer focusing on chemical process optimization. 

Mr. Kim received his J.D. from the New York University School of Law in 1994. He received his M.S. in chemical engineering from Columbia University in 1991 and his B.S. in chemical engineering from The Cooper Union in 1989. Mr. Kim has been admitted to the New York and US patent bars, and is also licensed as a professional chemical engineer.
